BBC One reveal cast for Sally Wainwright’s new drama, To Walk Invisible.
Jonathan Pryce (Wolf Hall, Game Of Thrones) has been cast in the role of the Brontë sisters’ father, Patrick, in BBC One’s original one-off drama written and directed by multi BAFTA winner Sally Wainwright (Happy Valley, Last Tango In Halifax).
Emily Brontë, author of the complex, ground-breaking Wuthering Heights, will be played by Chloe Pirrie (An Inspector Calls, War and Peace). She will be joined by Finn Atkins (Vera, Common) as her deeply ambitious older sister Charlotte, author of the phenomenally successful Jane Eyre, and Charlie Murphy as determined, level-headed younger sister Anne (The Last Kingdom, Happy Valley), who wrote the brutally honest novels Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Their brilliant but reckless brother Branwell, whose destructive behaviour threatened to destroy his family, will be played by Adam Nagaitis (Banished, Happy Valley).
To Walk Invisible takes a new look at this extraordinary family. It tells the story behind three remarkable women who, despite the obstacles they faced, came from obscurity to produce some of the greatest novels in the English language.
Writer and director Sally Wainwright says:
“This is such an exciting and ambitious project, and we have already had a huge amount of interest in it. Something about the lives of these three brilliant, talented Yorkshire women seems to touch people at a very deep level. I am honoured that the BBC have asked me to bring to life this fascinating family in a story set in the heart of West Yorkshire. We have a wonderful cast and I am delighted to be working alongside Karen Lewis (producer) again, and with Faith Penhale.”
Jonathan Pryce says:
“I am such an admirer of Sally Wainwright that if she were filming the phone book I would want to be in it! Her film will be a characteristically honest look at the whole Brontë family. I am really looking forward to it.”
Executive producer Faith Penhale says:
“To bring such fresh and exciting talent together for To Walk Invisible is testament to Sally’s extraordinary script, which sets out to tell the true story of this iconic literary family. Together with the wonderful Jonathan Pryce, Chloe, Finn, Charlie and Adam will show the Brontë family in a new and original light.”
Written and directed by Sally Wainwright, To Walk Invisible is a BBC Cymru Wales production in association with Lookout Point and in partnership with The Open University. Executive producers are Faith Penhale and Sally Wainwright. Karen Lewis is the producer.
Filming of the 1×120 minute drama will take place in and around Yorkshire from the beginning of May.
